A Mom's Heartache

I had a terrible experience of heartache today. Apparantly Kyra was chosen to recieve two awards at an assembly today and we were supposed to be notified by mail to come. Well unfortunately (that's an understatement) the letter to us some how got lost because we were never notified that she was recieving these awards so the devastating result was that I missed it! She came home and as she was getting off the bus I could tell something was wrong and my neighbor informed me that she had been at the assembly for her son and that Kyra had got these awards. My heart literally hurt! I didn't know how I was supposed to explain to Kyra that I hadn't even known she was getting these awards and why I had not been there for her. When we got home she sat on my lap, curled up on my shoulder and started crying. She cried for a good 15 minutes. Then we were both crying. It was the worst feeling to not be able to rewind and be there for her big moment of receiving her first school award. i haven't missed a fieldtrip or class party or anything all year and then I miss this! The worst part about it is that I was just sitting at home unaware of what I was missing-I didn't even have a conflict-I just never got the invitation. So needless to say we had to do something for a little celebration and cheering up and Kyra chose McDonald's as her "special lunch". Luckily after our tears we got a cute picture of her with her awards. I was so proud of her for getting these! She got the citizenship award and an Eagle award from the principal. Only 4 kids in her class got them so it was pretty cool!

I know we've already commiserated about this on the phone, but here's one more thought on the brighter side: At least you put Kyra in a cute outfit today! Still such a rotten thing to have happen! :(

That's so awful that you didn't get notified! That has happened at our school to several parents. Even though you missed the award assembly at school, you could re-enact it for family. That might help her feel special. I love that you took her to McDonald's to cheer both of you up. McDonald's always seems to cheer me up too!

I am so sorry! Who relies on mail these days? They do get used to us always being there. I think it's cute that she missed you so much!

Mom's heartaches are the worst!! So sorry! That is great for Kyra though. I'm sure there will be others in the future you can attend...not that that makes you or Kyra feel any better. What a good girl she is!!

So sad! Kyra is a good girl and I'm sure she understands how much you love her and would've missed anything to be there, had you known! Poor thing!

That made my cry! My mom had the same thing happen to us & it was really hard for me to understand at first. She felt bad, but after reading your blog, now I feel bad for both you and my mom. You did some good making up & made Kyra's day even more special than I bet the other parents did! Way to go mom!
