Treasure Her....

Last week my mom's friend at work brought in a clip from a video she had seen on TV. It was a film about this boy with down syndrome (the film is called the teachings of jon if you are interested) and what he had taught his family in his life. The last part of the show brought me to tears with this great quote........

"I know what you are thinking. You need a sign. What better one could I give but to make this little one whole and new? I could do it; but I will not. I am the Lord and not a conjurer. I gave this mite a gift I denied to all of you--eternal innocence. To you she looks imperfect--but to me she is flawless, She will never offend me, as all of you have done. She will never pervert or destroy the work of my Father's hands. She is necessary to you. She will evoke the kindness that will keep you human. Her infirmity will prompt you to gratitude for your own good fortune... More! She will remind you every day that I am who I am, that my ways are not yours, and that the smallest dust mite whirled in the darkest spaces does not fall out of my hand... I have chosen you. You have not chosen me. This little one is my sign to you. Treasure her!"

THat is so amazing! The other day I was reading your blog and thinking about how cute Bree is. My favorite thing about her is that she is so innocent and that she is so curious about everything. And she isn't afraid to try things out. A lot of times my kids look at things and think that they are cool, but they are afraid to dive in and find out what they are all about. Like the fireman boots, and the ping pong table, or even the ZHu Zhu pet. She isn't afraid to fail like the rest of us. To me that is also something I have learned from Bree.

That's awesome. Did you happen to watch American Idol last night? I know, I'm a dork, but anyways...there was a family on there with a son with down syndrome. He was such a blessing to his family they ended up adopting three more boys with ds. I thought of Bree then and what a blessing she is!

She is flawless. Honestly. And so adorable. Did you watch American Idol last night with the amazing 16 year old girl who had a brother with downs, and the parents didnt want him to be alone so they ended up adopting a baby with downs...and then another...and another? Gabe and I both got a little misty!!! They are so precious and innocent and truly a blessing to the families they are sent to. When I found your blog and saw little Bree I thought to myself - yes. Of course. You are exactly the parents that would not just accept a beautiful girl with Downs syndrome - but treasure her and see her as a gift and blessing - and with the most grace any people could muster! And with her two beautiful sisters to protect and teach her and love her - its totally perfect. What a lucky girl!

Oh my goodness....that totally made me start sobbing!! Mind if I use that one day on my blog, it's too good not to share with my family!!

So, you asked me if Hunter knows Ella has Down syndrome. I will have to blog about this to tell the whole story but we have told Hunter since day 1 that Ella has Ds, obviously at 2 1/2 he didn't understand, but my thinking was I didn't want it to be something scary later on (Hunter is WAY sensitive.) Does he fully understand it yet? No. BUT, he does recognize others with Down syndrome and knows that they are like "sissy," and it has opened up a lot of talk about how we should be nice to everyone because there will be people who aren't nice to Ella and it will hurt her feelings and we don't want to do that to other people.

I haven't gone into the whole chromosome thing etc, just told him that Ella was born with Down syndrome and that just means that she needs extra help doing the things that he is able to do. He has been really involved and present during her therapies (from birth to 18 months all of Ella's services were in our home so obviously he was there) up until now because they both go to school.

So the whole point of that : ) was yes Hunter knows that there is something "different" about Ella, he knows that it's called Down syndrome and he knows that he gets to help her learn things and also that he can't do everything for her. Again, I've been meaning to blog for awhile about Hunter's understanding and how I think it all effects him for awhile, so I will do that soon : ) HOpe that helps!!

By the way...is Bree's hair naturally wavy/curly or do you braid or roll it and if so do you use and product in it. I love Ella's hair after it's been braided but we always have the straight ends and tons of flyaways : )
